Many schools have been implanting later school day policies into their schedules throughout the past decade. Many of the schools are reporting substantial benefits behind sending kids to school at a later time.
Most school districts in the United States are not practicing the later school day policy throughout the entire week during the year. Rather, schools are choosing a day like Fridays to designate as “late start” days where kids are allowed 1-2 hours of rest and don’t have to come in until a later time.
In Chicago as little as 30 extra minutes of sleep has shown to give kids a dramatic change in their behavior as well as their studies. It has improved alertness, moods, tardiness and eating healthy breakfasts has become routine. The study shows that all kids can gain from later school days.
“The results were stunning. There’s no other word to use. We didn’t think we’d get that much band for the buck.”
These comments were given by Patricia Moss who’s an academic dean at the Rhode Island boarding school where the study was conducted.
The results of the study were posted in July’s Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Similar results have been found at other schools in the area as well as across the country.
Researchers say that there are lots of reasons why even 30 minutes a night can make a big difference and impact schools.
Teens have been found to enter their biggest sleep patterns around dawn, usually the time that they get up for school.
By providing more time for rest during these hours you can allow teams to have a healthier night’s sleep and provide adequate time to eat breakfast and enjoy their mornings.
