Gadsden State Community College is a popular community college that is located in Gadsden, Alabama. The college’s service area includes a number of neighboring cities including Calhoun, Cherokee, Etowah and St. Clair.
Currently, there are over 5,000 students who are enrolled and are attending the college which has been accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of colleges and Schools. They first received accreditation in 2003.
The college has a complex history, as it has gone through many mergers over its long history. The current college was formed in 2003 after Harry M. Ayers State Technical College and Gadsden State Community College merged.
The Ayers State Technical College was founded in 1963, and was primarily a trade school for ten years until it was converted into a full technical college.
The college continues to grow in popularity in the area, and offers a number of scholarships to students, including scholarships that will allow them to transfer to universities.
In 1997, the Gadsden State Technical Institute campus was designated as a Historically Black College or University by the Department of Education.
To this day, the college is primarily attended by black students, but does have a healthy multi-cultural population within the campus.
