Eating Disorders and Addictions Difficult to Treat in Teens

With so many negative things that influence teenagers in America, it’s hard to decipher which addiction is worse than another. Eating disorders are never acceptable, but it’s sometimes hard for parents, friends and family to consider them worse than drug or alcohol addictions. However, some reports are suggesting that and eating disorder condition is the hardest to treat.

Eating disorders are challenging because they affect so much of your brain and you’ve programmed yourself to think the way that you do, rather than having a much needed physical addiction like you would with drugs or alcohol.

Recovering from an eating disorder can be very challenging and it’s often about finding your inner strength. It’s hard to develop a straight forward system to recovery that’s going to work for everyone. We’re all different and for children and teens the situations is far more complicated than it is for adults.

Dr. David Schlager released this statement: “Disorders that start when you’re young, in adolescence, no matter what the disorder, are always harder to treat and harder to recover from.” Dr. David Schlager is a well respected clinical assistant and professor of psychiatry and behavioral science. He serves the community at the Tax A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine.

While eating disorders aren’t the only tough treatment addiction, it’s one of the most commonly dealt with problems. This ranges from anorexia and bulimia to addictions and mental illness.

In today’s society remaining skinny is the “acceptable” thing and those fears of gaining weight can be gripping on our children and young adults.

Studying the brain chemistry of teenagers might help us develop a clearer understanding of how young members of society think and why they have such a difficult time changing their course of direction when suffering from disorders.
