80% of Sexually Active Teens Use Some Type of Birth Control

A recent CDC study shows that nearly 80% of sexually active teens have used some form of birth control at one point in their life. Less than 20% of both boys and girls said that if their sexual acts resulted in pregnancy, they would at least be a little bit pleased.

Researches conducted interviews in person with nearly 3,000 teenagers on the subject. The teens ranged in ages from 15 to 19.

The rate of sexually active teens has remained virtually unchanged since the study was last conducted in 2002. The survey shows that 79% of girls and 81% of boys have used some kind of birth control method during their first sexual experience.

The most commonly used method of birth control is a condom, which was also used in 2002 as the most common method.

Kimberly Spector, an adolescent health educator in Los Angeles said that she was pleased with some of the results regarding birth control. She said that it means that people in her position are doing a better job of getting information to teens regarding the issues of sex and pregnancy.

Still, many teens do not seem to be wholly educated on the risks that are involved with unprotected sex that do not include pregnancy. Many said that they seemed unconcerned with the chances of contracting an STD through their sexual contact.

The report also shows that parents are doing an excellent job of educating their children on the subject.
